The Heartland sculpture by Paula Yoachim donated by Rhonda Seascrest on display at the Prairie Arts Center in North Platte Nebraska

Heartland

The Heartland, painted by Paula Yoachim, was created as part of the Nebraska by Heart project celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Nebraska in 2017. The design links Nebraska’s past and present through imagery representing communities, industries, and landscapes across the state. Wide-open spaces of Western Nebraska honor early settlers and pioneers traveling west, while central imagery highlights North Platte through landmarks such as Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, formerly known as Scouts Rest Ranch, symbolizing the spirit of the Old West. The inclusion of Bailey Yard - the world’s largest railroad classification yard - reflects the railroad’s lasting economic impact and creates a visual path of movement throughout the composition. Sandhill cranes in flight and ears of corn represent Nebraska’s migration patterns and agricultural roots.

The reverse side focuses on Eastern Nebraska, featuring icons such as the Nebraska State Capitol. A circular design draws inspiration from the Capitol’s Art Deco interior dome while also resembling a sun and mechanical gears, symbolizing the motion and energy of city life. A simplified skyline of Omaha rests beside the Missouri River, which forms Nebraska’s eastern border.

The sculpture was later donated to the Prairie Arts Center by former North Platte resident and art collector Rhonda Seacrest, who purchased the piece at the Nebraska by Heart auction in Lincoln. The event featured 89 heart sculptures created by regional artists and auctioned as a fundraiser benefiting the organizations Lead Up and Saide Dog Fund.
