The exhibition “Hyphen American” explores the many ways art conveys themes of identity, gender, race, ethnicity, and class that reflect the diversity of the American experience. Presented during the United States' two-hundred-and-fiftieth celebration, the artists in “Hyphen American” examine how individuals represent themselves and others, depict histories and struggles, and create communities and rituals that shape personal and collective identities.

This presentation of Sheldon Statewide is adapted from the exhibition “Hyphen American: Intersection of Identity, presented at Sheldon Museum of Art in the spring of 2026, organized by Christian Wurst, associate curator for exhibition.

This exhibition is part of Sheldon Statewide; an annual program started in 1987 with the purpose of sharing the collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art with the people of Nebraska. During the 2026-2027 school year, “Sheldon Statewide: Hyphen American”* *will visit eight venues and will be seen by thousands of people. The communities hosting this exhibition are Chadron, North Platte, McCook, Grand Island, York, Beatrice, Fremont, and Falls City. We encourage you to take part in this community event.
