“When I saw a similar project unfold in Colorado, I was instantly enthused. North Platte needed a project like that,” states Sharon Skinner.Three artists, Sharon, Wava Best and Patsy Smith began the ambitious project in 2007. With almost 2,000 tiles needed, the project required hundreds of bottles of glaze and many hours of kiln firings. Volunteers put in countless hours managing the project and assisting participants, as would-be artists, both children and adults, eagerly created their own personalized tiles. Each tile was then glazed, catalogued and included in the walls of a distinctive obelisk-shaped tower. The project was completed in 2011.

“The arts inspire us and soothe us and now the Community Unity Tile Project has connected us. This project will leave a legacy and inspire future generations.”
